The St. Helens school district is hiring for a swing/evening custodian at St. Helens High School. This is a year round full time position with working hours 3-11:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
Qualified candidate will have a high school diploma or GED or the equivalent of experience and education.
Just a few facts about some of our benefits:
- Time Off: All regular/full time employees are allowed two (2) days of discretionary leave during the school year. The District shall allow each full time employee ten (10) days’ sick leave at full pay during each school year or one (1) day per month employed, whichever is greater. Sick leave not take shall accumulate for an unlimited number of days.
- Holidays: Holiday pay shall be granted to regular/full time employees for the following listed categories:
- 10 & 11 month employees: Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day and Memorial Day
- 12 month employees: July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day and Memorial Day Exception: Custodians will have the day after Thanksgiving in lieu of Veteran’s Day. Juneteenth will be a non-contract, non-paid day for all classified employees.
- Health Insurance: The District agrees to pay the medical, dental, vision and life insurance CAP amounts listed below. The employee will be responsible to pay the remaining through a payroll deduction:

JOB SUMMARY
Keep the district’s school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Provide students a safe, clean, comfortable place in which to learn, play and develop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of lead swing custodian shall be, but not limited to the items listed below. Additional duties may be assigned by the building Principal, Supervisor of Custodians / Maintenance Supervisor.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining all boilers and other major equipment.
- Assists and participates in necessary painting and general repairs to plumbing, carpentry, and general mechanics areas during summer.
- Participates in general cleaning and maintenance of the school building on night shift and replaces light bulbs.
- Assumes responsibility for the general security of the building.
- Assumes responsibility for the general fire safety of the building.
- Performs emergency repair or cleaning services as necessary.
- Take down the flags after school is dismissed.
- Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
- Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires.
- Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Washes all windows on both the inside and outside.
- Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Cleans whiteboards as required.
- Reports major repairs needed promptly to the Principal/Supervisor.
- Reports immediately to the Principal/Supervisor any damage to school property.
- Remains on the school premises during work hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance required by the Principal/Supervisor.
- Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Principal/Supervisor.
- Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste, makes every effort to recycle whenever possible.
- Responsible for emergency decisions regarding maintenance. Call the Lead Custodian if there is a question.
- Lead Custodian responsible for other Night Custodian personnel in fulfilling time obligations.
- Responsibility to carry out instructions to other custodian personnel from Head Custodian such as banquets and basketball games.
- Maintain cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Attend work regularly and be punctual.
MARGINAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- May be asked to assist with providing direction to Custodian(s).
- Attends in-service training.
- Assists in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment by reporting to the lead worker or Head Custodian.
- Assists maintenance and groundskeeping as necessary
- Attends staff meetings
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides supervision to student sweeper(s).
- All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Knowledge of an ability to apply skills pertaining to general custodial work.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations.
- Ability to write routing reports and correspondence.
- Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community.
- Ability to add, subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
- Ability to perform basic operations using weight measure unit, volume and distance.
- Ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or scheduling form.
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
- One year of custodial experience preferred.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high. The employee is exposed to a variety of conditions including: wet or humid, work near moving parts, work in high precarious places, a variety of cleaning agents, some hazardous chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (i.e., boiler room), risk of electrical shock and vibration.
SALARY
As negotiated in the OSEA bargaining agreement. Salary range listed includes rates for PERS salaries.
